Two things about email:

1. Types of emails I don’t like:

Library Elf emails which I inevitably don’t read until after my books are overdue.
Those Facebook emails you get because someone you don’t know has replied to someone you don’t know on a discussion about something you can’t remember commenting on six months ago.
Invoice emails/emails generally informing me about money being removed from my account and put into someone else’s.
The emails from Abbey where they use Comic Sans. Hello. You are a bank. This is, for once, not a phishing email. At least try and make it look like you didn’t get a bunch of Indonesian schoolkids to write it.

The 50 Dollar Logo Experiment

I turned to the cleverly named 50DollarLogo.com, a site based in Sri Lanka or somewhere promising six logo designs, unlimited revisions, and a 1–3 day turnaround. Who needs messy things like research, insight, or even a modicum of information about my business, when I can have unlimited revisions?

This feels a lot like my life at the moment, only I am the one trying to make a decent logo out of cheese and Nazareth and the people I work for want something with more anthropomorphism.

I have a packaging thing. I love packaging design. This comes in especially handy to pass time when doing something I really don’t love, like having my hair cut. All that sitting still and not fidgeting and making small talk about Christmas (come on, people, it was a month ago. Try harder.) and having to sit in front of a mirror for an age when, for the most part, I’m vampiric about mirrors.

A big chunk of hairdresser income comes from selling overpriced hair product, and overpriced hair product generally has brilliant packaging in order to make people like me buy some overpriced hair product they won’t use but will gaze at lovingly.Â Depending on the target market,Â packaging ranges from classy to fun to, err… this:

BNP database leak reveals shocking truth about horse dentists

The BNP member list leak is, not surprisingly, fairly controversial. Not least for the guy on the database who placed a “request for absolute confidentiality”. But strip away the the basic personal data and the political revelations, and concentrate instead only on the “Interesting Notes” column, and what you get is a perfect snapshot of modern Britain, possibly the only place odd enough to have Buddhist BNP members.

Looking further, at the “reasons for not renewing membership” notes, you get the following gems. I’m not sure what the specific reports or revelations were, but I hope the people concerned weren’t too upset when they discovered that the party were, you know, a bit racist:

took offence to newspaper reports about the Party
objects to being told he shouldn’t wear a bomber jacket
embarrassed by revelations in Private Eye re. councillors
took exception to being asked to contact another similarly aged lady member!

When officials asked for the Welsh translation of a road sign, they thought the reply was what they needed.

Unfortunately, the e-mail response to Swansea council said in Welsh: “I am not in the office at the moment. Please send any work to be translated”.Â So that was what went up under the English version which barred lorries from a road near a supermarket. [Full story]
